Great Tips For Self Storage Packing when Moving

When you are moving to Spain, you might not be able to bring all your furniture at once, and need a self storage unit to temporarily (or long term) store those items you can’t bring.

Packing your storage unit is not very hard, but you need to take the time to plan this if you want to ensure that you are getting the most out of the space that you rent.  A lot of people think they need more space than they actually do.  When you know some self storage packing tips, you will be able to determine the size that you actually need and use your unit more effectively.

How To Pack A Self Storage Unit

Before you put any of your belongings into your storage unit, you need to make a list or take pictures of the items.  This will be helpful in the event that something happens to the items while they are in storage and you have to make an insurance claim.  The list will also work as a good reference if you need to remember what you have in your storage unit in the future.

Hong Kong Storage who provide self storage in Hong Kong advise that when you pack your belongings, you should use strong and uniform boxes that will be easy to stack.  This will ensure that you make the most of the vertical space in your storage unit.  You do not need to use any special kind of boxes.

Once you get to your storage unit, you need to unload all of your boxes into the loading bay.  The facility will generally have trolleys available to help you get your boxes to your storage unit.  When you use the trolley, you need to be careful that you do not overload it or stack your boxes incorrectly.

When you get to your unit, you should cover the ground with a dust sheet as this will protect your goods.  You should then identify the heaviest or fullest box and place these down first.  You should also put your bulky items down first.

If you need to access any items regularly, you will need to place them to the side.  This is due to the fact that you want these items to be close to the front of the unit.  If you are going to be accessing most of the items in the unit, you will need to leave an aisle for easier access.  Fragile goods will need to be clearly identified and you need to ensure that any labels can be clearly seen.

When storing mattresses and sofas, you need to do this on end and stack chairs pad-to-pad.  This will help you minimize the amount of space that you need in the storage unit.  When stacking your boxes, you can maximize your use of space by starting from the back of the unit.  You should also use single items to fill the gaps as you go along.  If you can, you should look at raising the boxes from the ground by using wooden pallets.

You should also make the most of hollow spaces when packing.  You should not leave your wardrobes, drawers, suitcases and laundry baskets empty.  Fill these spaces with pillows, linen, and clothing to make the most of your storage.

If you have items with sharp corners or any garden tools, you need to take care when packing them.  All outdoor equipment needs to be cleaned before storing.  Once all of your items are in the unit, you need to cover everything with a dust sheet to keep them clean and protected.

Now you are ready to move to Spain knowing that the items you could not bring with you are safe and sound and packed well in a storage unit that will be easier to access when you do decide to move all your stuff over!
